Cherry Blossom Festival Parade

Apr 14, DC: One of DC’s largest spectator events, the parade runs for 10 blocks along iconic Constitution Avenue. Giant colorful helium balloons, elaborate floats, marching bands from across the country, celebrity entertainers, and performers burst down the Parade route in a grand spectacle of music and showmanship seen only once a year during the Festival.

Japanese Street Festival

Apr 14, DC: The Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival is the largest one-day celebration of Japanese culture in the United States and is proud to be the grand finale of the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Performers and vendors travel from all over the country and the world to Washington, DC to share their love of Japanese culture and traditions with the Festival attendees.

DC Emancipation Concert

Apr 14, DC: The DC Compensated Emancipation Act of 1862 ended slavery in Washington, DC, freed 3,100 individuals, reimbursed those who had legally owned them and offered the newly freed women and men money to emigrate. It is this legislation, and the courage and struggle of those who fought to make it a reality, that we commemorate every April 16, DC Emancipation Day.

Evicted

Opening April 14, DC: A stable place to call home is one of the best predictors of success. Yet, each year more than 2.4 million Americans, most of them low-income renters, face eviction. While it used to be rare even in the poorest neighborhoods, forcible removal has become ordinary, with families facing eviction from the most squalid, barely inhabitable apartments. This phenomenon exposes not only income inequality in America, but also the growing separation between the built environments of the rich and the poor. The National Building Museum announces a new, ground-breaking exhibition exploring the causes and impacts of eviction.

The Mountaintop

My Lady's Manor Steeplechase Races

Apr 14, Monkton: One of Maryland’s oldest and most competitive days of timber racing will be run this weekend. Since 1909, this exciting day of equestrian sport has marked the beginning of spring in the Harford County countryside! In addition to the races, guests will enjoy live bluegrass music, food vendors and horse-themed merchandise tents and exhibits. The paddock, where horses are paraded before the jockeys are mounted, is open to the public.
