Rocks, Rivers, and Railroads in Ellicott City and the Patapsco Valley (Ellicott City)
In 1771 four Quakers from Pennsylvania arrived in the Patapsco Valley to take advantage of the area’s steep slopes and fast running river (and cheap land, for it was poor for farming). The Ellicott brothers established a flour mill here and soon other mills, businesses, and settlements followed.  Come join with a local naturalist and author on a walk to discover why geological and geographic features of the Patapsco Valley caught the eye of the Ellicott Brothers, the B&O Railroad, and other settlements followed. Ellicott City and its surrounds have been called “the Silicon Valley of the 1700s and 1800s,” as it sparkled with innovation brought on by bright engineers improving their milling operations.
For this tour, co-sponsored by Patapsco Heritage Greenway and Baltimore Heritage, Inc., we will journey through 450 million years of environmental and social history in two hours to discover why geological and geographic features of the Patapsco Valley caught the eye of the Ellicott Brothers and the B&O Railroad, and encouraged others to settle in this spot. Our tour guide is Mr. Ned Tillman, author of the book Saving the Places We Love: Paths to Environmental Stewardship. (His book is available for reduced price purchase at time of tour reservation.) The walk will include some hills but also plenty of breaks. With thanks to the Howard County Office of Tourism and Promotion, we will start and end the walk at the Welcome Center, with parking behind and a restroom within at the Old Post Office, 8267 Main Street in historic Ellicott City.
Join us for an outdoor jazz concert and art show at the elegant Historic Oakland!
Multi-talented singer, songwriter and musician, John Milton Wesleywill serenade you in Historic Oakland’s Bishops Graden. Take a stroll through the Howard County Center For African American Culture–just steps away from the entertainment. They will have artwork on display as well.
Mr. Wesley, a Columbia, MD native, spent his early years on keyboards with The Emotions, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson on many of their award winning albums.
