This Weekend:

The Comedy Pigs, MET’S hilarious sketch and improv group, will celebrate 21 years of laughter. The Pigs have written hundreds of sketches and songs, played over 500 performances, and have had over 40 people call themselves “Pigs.” This anniversary brings back many familiar faces and sketches. For mature audiences. 

The Western Maryland Street Rod Round Up, sponsored by the Western Maryland Street Rod Association, features poker runs, dances, and a corn roast.

This Labor Day Weekend Festival, in its fifth year, is know for featuring world-class jazz performers and for introducing rising stars on the jazz scene. The Festival opens Thursday night with jazz guitarist Frank Vignola, followed on Friday night by trumpeter Etienne Charles. Saturday's concert features a tribute to Dave Brubeck in the afternoon and a concert by pianist Monty Alexander that night. Sunday features jazz/gospel vocalist Dee Daniels.

Stellaluna (Frederick)

Located just eighteen miles north of the District of Columbia, the charming Quaker Town of Brookeville played a significant role in local and national history, as “United States Capital for a Day” on August 26, 1814, during the British occupation of Washington. 

Enjoy a walk to the river, a petting zoo and amusements, live performances of the Music of the War of 1812 and from The British Invasion Tribute, artisans, crafters, local food, and evening entertainment.

The Kennedy Center hosts its 13th annual Page- to-Stage new play festival, featuring more than 40 D.C.- area theater companies. This year's festival pays tribute to the Women's Voices Theater Festival--an initiative by more than 40 D.C. area theaters to produce a world premiere play by a female dramatist in the fall of 2015. In honor of the Women's Voices Theater Festival, the 13th Annual Page-to-Stage festival showcases more than 30 female playwrights.

Japanese performance and installation artist Chiharu Shiota installs a monumental yet intimate work in the Sackler pavilion this summer. Haunted by the traces that the human body leaves behind, the work amasses personal memories of lost individuals and past moments through an accumulation of discarded shoes and notes collected by the artist.

The whole family can participate in hands-on living history activities inside the 1756 fort. Hours are 11 am to 3 pm. Park entrance fees apply.

Dog Days of Summer (Triangle, VA)
National Museum of the Marine Corps--Military working dogs demonstrate their skills at this event that also features displays by local dog organizations and Virginia Reptile Rescue Inc. Free

The Library of Congress National Book Festival returns with a stacked lineup -- though perhaps not as tall as the tower of books on your nightstand. The 2014 festival has moved indoors, from the Mall to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, and the new location comes with perks: The festival has added three pavilions and extended its hours until 10 p.m. Scheduled speakers include retired Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O'Connor, former poet laureate Billy Collins and National Book Award-winner E.L Doctorow, along with more than 100 others. A ground-breaking documentary set to challenge negative stereotypes surrounding marriage and parenting in the black community. (60 minutes) From the creators of the award-winning site BlackandMarriedWithKids.com comes a ground-breaking documentary set to challenge negative stereotypes surrounding marriage and parenting in the black community. Couples and experts discuss topics such as the image and portrayal of black marriages and families, the effect the Obamas will have on marriage in the black community and the importance of parenting. Included with museum admission.

The second Sunday of August to the following Saturday is designated as Shop Maryland tax-free Week each year. That means qualifying apparel and footwear $100 or less, per item, are exempt from the state sales tax. Accessory items are not included.
