U.S. Botanic Garden-- Beyond being a delightfully warm place to seek refuge from winter's worst weather, the Botanic Garden is decked out in extra greenery for its annual exhibit of Washington landmarks created out of plants. And if a miniature Lincoln Memorial made out of sea grape leaves, reindeer moss and coriander seeds isn't whimsical enough for you, there's also a nautical-themed model train display with more than 30 lighthouses, mermaids and a pirate ship. -- Amy Orndorff

Play Work Build (D.C.)
National Building Museum--The exhibit explores the history of play through a toy collection and foam block area. When the National Building Museum’s curators were looking for something kid-friendly to replace the popular “Lego Architecture” exhibition, they went to Rockwell. His company donated the playground-size blocks and created smaller ones especially for the museum. Rockwell also designed a huge screen that fills with falling virtual blocks. If you stand on a special mat in front of the screen, cameras capture your shape and it appears onscreen. Virtual blocks then magically fill that shape and continue stacking up to the ceiling.

Wye Grist Mill Grinding Days (Wye Mills)
The Wye Grist Mill is located in the Town of Wye Mills, on Maryland's Eastern Shore. The Wye Grist Mill has been nearly continuously grinding grain since 1682, and is credited with supplying a substantial amount of the flour that fed George Washington's army during the American Revolutionary War. Discover the long and rich history of the oldest commercial operation in Queen Anne's and Talbot Counties (the county boundaries run through the mill). Watch the waterwheel turn the heavy millstones as they grind grain, with millers explaining the milling process.  Explore our exhibits - featuring over 325 years of grain milling technology that has been in use here.

On Tuesday, the Kreeger Museum will open “The Lure of the Forest,” a solo exhibition dedicated to the work of the Northern Virginia artist, whose sculptures have been shown around the world.

Live Performance of "A Christmas Carol" Adaptation by Tony Reich (Spencerville)
This December, Cedar Ridge Community Theater will stage a production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, adapted by Tony Reich and directed by Patti Restivo. A small group of actors perform almost 50 roles in telling Dickens’ timeless classic of regret, repentance, and redemption. Performances are December 12 and 13 at 7:30 PM and December 14 at 3 PM. Free refreshments will be served during intermission.
Tickets are $5 for ages 6 and up; ages 5 and under are free but do require a ticket.
